If you’re one of those people, like me, who have so much “stuff” that you really don’t want or need anything for Christmas, ask your friends and family to support a good cause in your name. MarineBio.org is a nonprofit organization that you can support with tax-exempt donations. A gift to us would help us cover our increasing hosting and development costs, and would greatly help us get more species launched and more content online. When you consider that MB reaches more than 300,000 people each month, you can be certain that you are making a difference when you make a donation to MarineBio.org. You’re helping us show and teach people about the wonders of the ocean and marine life so that they can develop a strong appreciation and desire to protect it.
Some of the Plankton Forum members have asked about adopting a whale or dolphin. If this appeals to you to give or receive as a gift, we recommend the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS). Our Director of Marine Mammals, Erich Hoyt, is affiliated with WDCS, so we know they’re a good group and you can see yourself on their website that they’re doing good work.
WDCS has helped convince the European Union not to impose a tariff on imports of jojoba esters, which would have resulted in an increased demand for whale oil for cosmetics. WDCS has facilitated strong statements from the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums against dolphin drive hunts, and Greenland has reduced its narwhal hunting quotas and has imposed a ban on the export of narwhal ivory. WDCS continues to keep the pressure on whaling countries in their campaign to end commercial whaling for good.

We encourage you to pass the message to give to good causes to your family and friends. A donation is a heart-warming and thoughtful gift for those of us who care about this planet, and particularly the ocean.
